Do people have a particular Tarot deck that they trust more than others? Why do you find that particular deck more trustworthy than others?

I am very curious to know the preferences of those who seek readings or have interests in the Tarot.

What makes a deck more reliable for you?
What do you look for in a good Tarot deck?

For me, I am always drawn to very colorful decks with many symbols and strong imagry that can resonate. I personally tend to steer away from very simplistic looking decks as they may not really offer me much to ponder on. I like to consider the many layers and hidden things in cards, images, paintings, and pictures. I tend to analyze things more and prefer decks that require closer examinations. A deck that seems to offer more than just black and white, cut and dry images to me suggests that the deck will reflect the many complications that can occur in real life. You know what I mean?

Sometimes I feel a tad exhausted using the Rider-Waite deck. The more I use it sometimes, the more the same old patterns seem to bore me or tax me. I like variety and like to change it up sometimes.

How do you all feel about your Tarot decks?

I had the Aleister Crowley deck from ages 14-27? Someone stole them from me.. I was drawn to the beautiful artwork, but they seemed very negative once i started reading with them. this must be the most difficult deck out there. Strangely after some time, it started to smell like incense, which i did not used around my deck.. odd huh?
Well as much as I hate thieves, I'm glad it was stolen, i whole heartedly believe something was wrong with those cards and now that i know more about crowley the more i suspect the cards opened some sort of non beneficial gateway which seems to have closed with the disappearance of the cards.
At one point i had several decks, but they too were stolen and i really didn't read them very often, so i wasn't great AT ALL.
I too am drawn to colorful decks, but have not replaced my old ones. I'm searching for the best type. I looked up your feng shui deck and it seems to draw me in. i may go for that one since it is in area of interest to me, now if i could only find it at the bookstore..I want to get one sooner rather than later, lol.

You could find most Tarot decks actually on Amazon.com--I found quite a few I like there. But traditionally, as I understand it from a few fellow readers, the best decks are the ones that are given as gifts--they have a purpose behind them--and the giver injects (hopefully) good vibes, best wishes, and luck upon the deck.

Decks you buy from the store will need lots of bonding time with you and lots of added TLC. They are the cleanest and coldest to work with right off the bat and accuracy may be off until you warm them up with your mojo.

Allister Crowley had a very interesting background as a man with a very checkered story and connection I guess to the supernatural or esoteric. Some believe he was out of his gourd nuts and some revere him as a spiritual guide or man with great insights. As for me, I trust my own sense experiences and what I can feel, see, touch, taste, and smell. For me, I apply basic common sense, intuition, logic, and reasoning.

I do believe though that things can offer up bad vibes and negative energies. It's the same with physical places too. Some places just give off eerie energies. Now I don't know if Alllister Cowley was legit or not but certainly he may have evoked creepiness with his manner of dress, attitude, symbols, and eccentric lifestyle--whether he was tapped into something demonic/Satanic/or otherworldly, I have my personal doubts--but I guess the world may never really know, right?

PostPosted: Fri Jun 10, 2011 9:20 pm    Post subject: Daily Card - Reflection Reply with quote

Today I thought I would shuffle up my Rider-Waite deck and select a "Card for the Day" and offer its meaning and interpretations as it may apply for the day.

For June 10th:

The Hermit

The Hermit usually indicates a soul that is at a spiritual crossroads of sorts. There is a call to look inward before chosing a path. You carry within you a light that has the abillity to look in many directions--including inwardly. Take time out from your busy day to look inward once in a while. The insights you need to choose the path to progress are often found within. This card often appeals to introverts, spiritual people, and intellectuals with strong reasoning skills and logical frames of mind.

In the reversed poistion, that is upside-down, the card often indicates clouded judgement or some block or obstacle or hesitation to look inward. Either way, this is a card about reflection and evaluation.

It is also sometimes read as a card indicating Enlightenment--personal enlightenment that is intimate and powerful and profound. It is a wisdom and knowledge so strong that it is a light for others who may be in need of it. In some sense the Hermit is a guide and mentor for others. The Hermit carries with him the light of wisdom and clarity so that others may see the road ahead. The Hermit is a teacher or mentor for the lost and wayward. Sometimes in a spread, the Hermit indicates a coming influence that is sage-like, wise beyond years, or clear and bright.

As you go about your day, think inwardly and be on the lookout for sage advice and counsel.

Funny thing is I had no idea who Crowley was until years after I'd had the deck. the deck is absolutely beautiful, but complicated imagery.
I actually just bought a couple of "mini decks" or pocket sized ones..
I plan on getting the feng shui deck off of amazon or ebay probably tonight. I want to get back into the tarot.. How should i go about it.. study a card a day or something?

I picked up a few books on it and did the study a card a day thing for a while-- daily meditations with the deck sort of thing. But mostly I just examined the deck and did some self-readings for practice to see what came up and what connections I got. I did a self-reading a week with some pretty open-ended questions and nothing fancy.

Occaisonally I did readings for others here and there and got their feedback to see what I might have been clicking on what I might have overlooked or missed. The thing about Tarot that I have found so far for me these past 15 years is that the Tarot is very personal and each deck that becomes yours is attuned to your way of thinking and feeling. It can read you as much as you read it.

I think the more you handle the cards and study their images and symbols and colors, the more you'll pick up the patterns and stories the cards actually begin to tell you.

If I come across any book titles off the top of my head, I'll put it in a seperate thread or something.

A question I have often been asked regarding the Tarot and maybe my Tarot readings is the mention or instance of Reversed cards. I thought today I would explain at least how I use Reversed cards and what they generally mean in my readings.

A Reversed card is simply a card that is laid out upside down as a result of the Tarot reader's shuffling of the deck. Every card selected and how the cards are summoned is at least by all appearences a random act. The cards that surface and how they do so (Reversed or not) are meant to do so exactly as they do. Even if a card drops or flips over seemingly by mistake is a card to be noticed and included in a reading-- there is a reason a card comes up and a reason why the cards do what they do.

The purpose of the Tarot is to relay a message or messages or offer a series of insights or intuitive glimpses into the near future, the past, possibly the present-- on all manner of topics it is presented with.

A card that is placed upside-down simply indicates that the meaning of the card can be interpreted in the following ways:

An upside down or Reversed card may indicate that the reader should take an Opposite interpretation.

Or... the intensity of an energy or influence is blocked or going against some obstacle that will not let it manifest.

Or... the intensity of an energy, influence, or event that is coming to pass or has passed is lessened considerably.

If the card in question is a Court card (i.e. Page, Knight, Queen or King) and there is strong indication of an individual or group of individuals involved in the matter being discussed, then the qualities or personality traits that would normally be at their peak or normally present in these people are subdued, oppressed, suppressed or in some way absent or blocked. Or the influence of these people is being met with resistance or is being lessened or ignored. Other cards may be necessary to decipher the cause of the block.

Some people assume that a Reversed card simply turns a positive card or good thing into a bad or negative thing-- the truth is, this is not always or necessarily the case. Take for example The Tower card. Right side up, The Tower generally indicates dramatic upheaval, likely tragedy, or destructive change, violent conflict, or tense circumstances and chaos. The Reverse of this card suggests constructive change, necessary transition, rebuilding, and end or block to tragic events and situations, a passing of confusion into clarity. Another indication might only suggest a very slight possibility of the tragic or chaotic events occuring as opposed to a guarenteed outcome.

Another example is The Lovers card in Reverse. One might assume The Lovers in Reverse would suggest a horrible break-up, divorce, split, seperation or some such. This is not always the case and can't be assumed. More often than not, the Reverse of this card simply indicates a potential relationship developing or a relationship that requires some work to develop. The spark of romance is dimming but not necessarily snuffed out. There might also be an indication where this Reversed card merely indicates a very young, new relationship as opposed to a well establiished, long-standing one.

So bottom line, if you get a spread with lots of cards in Reverse, don't panic or freak out or run for the nearest church or bomb shelter-- its not the end of the world. The cards are simply pointing out some areas that need some attention and are trying to warn you with insights that are trying to be as accurate as possible. They are also trying to indicate the severity or intensity-- in a sense the cards know that there are two side to every coin and two sides to every story--at least. And if you are really good at the Tarot reading, you may realize that the cards can probably indicate not just two sides, but many, many more.

Have fun!

Once again I shuffle my Rider-Waite deck and select a Tarot card of the day to interpret and explain some of the interpretations as they might apply today.

For July 19th, 2011

Four of Wands

This card depicts four tall wands decorated with flowers and garlands. In the backdrop we see a castle keep and a pair of robed figures appearing to welcome us with upraised hands bearing more flowers and fruits and things. In the left background, is the indication of a party or celebration already in progress it would seem.

This card often fascinates me because it seems to suggest the feel of a homecoming or a long awaited returning rather than just a celebration. There is this notion of a completed journey after a long struggle.

However, another interpretation suggests a farewell or parting-- a sort of celebretory Bon Voyage! sort of message. The embarking on a long adventure to follow one last look back on the point of origin. So this card can mark either a beginning or an end depending on the context of the other cards in the spread.

It can also be noted that because this is a card in the suit of Wands and the interpretation is relatively positive and upbeat, we can associate this card with a lot of Spring seasonal connotations with fertility, planting, growing, and later the Summer gathering of fruits.

Because the background is just as appealing to the eyes as the four wands and two welcoming figures in the foreground, we can also make associations to things concerning the home--sanctuary, safety, comfort, protection, shelter... these words come up with this card.

So there ya go... the Four of Wands, enjoy.

Tarot Card of the Day for October 23rd, 2011

Today I pluck out the 7 of Cups from the Rider-Waite deck and offer up its typical interpretations!

The 7 of Cups often describes a situation involving deception and illusions. When you look at the card, you see 7 cups containing a variety of things-- some good, some bad, some nasty, some nice--but all in a thick cloud of grey surrounding it--making it difficult for the one viewing these cups to discern of what he sees is real or trustworthy.

This card is often seen as a warning akin to "Buyer Beware" or "Be Careful, What You See You Might Just Get" or "Nothing Is As It Seems". It is a card of many warnings suggesting to look closely, step back and consider your choices, and do not be quick to judge based upon appearences. This is an especially important card if it comes up in spreads regarding relationships and personal encounters.

If this card is present with The Hanged Man, The Star, The High Preistess, or the Ace of Cups... it is definitely a card about perception and the senses of sight, hearing, and those concerning detection. With the Ace of Cups-- it is concerning a message that may offer clarity or intelligent information that should be heeded. The Star or High Preistess present with 7 of Cups indicates attempts to cloud intuition and create confusion or blocks on insights.

The reversed (upside-down) interpretation indicates a less severe or less intense effort at deception or illusion and a move towards clarity and understanding. The attempts at confusion are weak or thin and what is offered is perhaps more reliable. But still exercise some caution.

November 14th, 2011 -

Today I find myself focusin on the Aces of the Tarot deck. The Aces generally indicate messages or strong indications or signals of energy concerning the following areas:

Wands - Career, job, enterprises, projects

Swords - Emotions, relationships, mental health, emotional health

Cups - Intellience, communication, creativity, artistic abillity, psychic energy, relationships.

Pentacles - Finances, money, career, job, home matters, buisness affairs

There is some overlap but each suit focuses on either positive or neative aspects of an area of interest and whether or it involves you or those around you. Ace of Wands and Ace of Swords may also indicate messaes comin in early in the morning or early in the year or early in the week, or early in the season. The Ace of Cups and Ace of Pentacles suggest later timings with Ace of Pentacles and other combinations of cards like The Moon for example indicating night time or late evening. 5 of Pentacles and Ace of Pentacles may also indicate late winter message pertaining to home issues or safety and security.

There are many ways to connect an Ace card with the Minor Arcana and most pictures and depictions on each card will clue you in to the nature of the messae or energy coming in.

With Aces in any reversed position, the message or new energy that is coming in is blocked temporarily, or being delayed by some circumstance. It can also indicate a negative message or signal of bad news or unwanted information coming in.
