Several weeks back I was driving home from work after dark when I approached several stopped cars on both sides of the road. I could see a figure lying in the road in the headlights of a vehicle. At first, I thought it might be a human, but as I got closer I saw it was a deer. In the cold, the heat from the body created a sort of fog rising from the animal. An older couple who had apparently struck the deer were out of their car and very slowly trying to approach it.
Then suddenly it rose to its feet but quickly collapsed. Then it tried again and remained standing in the glare of the headlights with a half dozen cars around. It didn't or couldn't move for a couple moments and I was transfixed. Then it tried walking toward the side of the road and collapsed again after a couple steps. Finally, it rose again and awkwardly leapt its way off the road and into the woods. I don't know the ultimate fate of the deer, but for those few moments I felt it was an experience beyond the realm of normal everyday occurences. I thought of the word "mystical". I have had one other encounter with a deer at night frozen in the headlights as I stopped my car while it stood on a seldom-used dirt road and seemed to stare in through my windshield right at me. It gave me the chills. I wonder if there are others who have had similar experiences with deer or perhaps other animals.

We go camping in Sierras in Californis and often see deer scrambling across road. We often slow down because we don't want to hit any. They will stop sometimes in the middle of the road afraid to move. We love animals and in some parks they are so used to humans, they graze when close by.
I hope your poor creatture deer made it home safely.
I have read that if you think of an animal you want to connect with in a meditation, most often deer comes up for me.
