I read some where that Buddha learned psychic stuff first before leaving it behind and reaching enlightenment, is it part of the path of enlightenment? May be this is what is missing from a lot of meditation systems and why there don't seem to be many or any enlightened people around.

Sure to some schools putting psychic stuff in the same bag as enlightenment is blasphemy, but these days I'd encourage people to nut it out for themselves, because many teachers who say one thing or another aren't necessarily enlightened anyway and are just regurgitating what they were told.
Personally I think that the psychic connects you to consciousness that was dormant - basically wakes it up. Funny then that Enlightenment was also been called "awakening." Not that I'm saying that one equals the other, but I definitely think that psychic ability is an important waypoint for the big E - just not in the "tell me who my mother's lover is" kind of way.

"and why there don't seem to be many or any enlightened people around." <- means that you don't attract them to your life. And please if you find my information wrong, discard it, if it's not for you. Well...
In a manner of speaking you are already enlightened, your view of yourself and your life is something unique. You are enlightened by means of existence in the infinite universe, but the psychic powers should be developed by training, in my opinion. I recommend that you do: trance meditation, energywork and energy raising at first. You must never be disturbed by any influence. Your psychic powers will naturally develop to a higher degree with training when you can do things that seem impossible to the untrained mind.
So, in a nutshell, train as hard as you can and don't take life seriously.
But, it's all up to you, please discard this knowledge if its not right for you. Remember always, I might be feeding you bullsh*t.
