What type of 'entity or spirit'? That could help in focusing in on a more direct proposal. Are you sure it is an entity not a remnant or other energy source, or is this more of a general question?
Not really defined as energy work by most, but smudging with White Sage (Salvia apiana)works wonders. 
Also braids of Sweetgrass(Hierochole odarata) smudge works also, although I have very very little experience with it...so far.
Planting Rue(Ruta graveolens not Syrian Rue) in the outermost corners of your yard(or potted in the home corners, to bring in for Winter, etc.) will help protect harmful 'energies' from entering the perimeter in the first place. Nothing is impenetrable though.
Possibly even carving a cottonwood root doll or making a golem or 'battery' to capture the entity in? Aladdin style.
