The Astral Realm exists everywhere that materiality exists, and all planets Earth share the same "Astral ocean". It is a physical environment except you are without a physical body. Spirit-Physical is the place you arrive when you make the successful transition through the Astral. Some people who have died may become trapped by not relinquishing their addiction to the third dimension. Fear, grief and emotional attachments to physical family can also keep one entrapped in that two-dimensional realm.
We are solely responsible for the conduct of our consciousness. There are loved ones who come to meet us at that door of death to see us safely delivered to the other side. But, if they are not acknowledged, they cannot help you or interfere. Until there is a change, a person can be entrapped in the Astral Realm. That entrapment however only lasts as long as the addiction lasts. There are also those who are just confused and not trapped. In these encounters tell them to Look For Their Light. That is all you can do for them. You cannot force them. Interference is not acceptable.
There are permanent residents of this zone which you cannot help. Regardless of what you may hear, you cannot help someone who is "trapped". They must find their own way.
In the astral realm are many levels of activity, beingness and areas of experience. It’s as complex as our reality and has as much diversity of negative and positive energy as well. Certain life forms still exist that have not been able to move beyond their initial creation. But, in the future, evolution will build proper vehicles for them to complete their cycle.
Various other life forms developed and evolved which combined with human and animal form. Myths and legends are rooted in reality and one is very likely to encounter these life forms in this Realm. In the astral is where we find gargoyles, and many other indescribable entity forms.
It’s from the astral realm that mischievous entities cause Ouija boards to lie, often bring deception in automatic writing, and appear through channels who are not properly protected. There are many in this dimension of experience anxious to return to the physical experience, and will do so at any cost.
As you develop psychic abilities and experience, do it with awareness. Source (Spirit Guides and Teachers), will always tell you, “try what we give you, to see if it is valid”. Don’t take the word of anyone without testing it. The best test is your own spiritual success.
After passing through the Astral, physical life becomes very dim. There are many other exciting experiences which make this physical life quite unimportant. It’s like going on vacation, where the work place becomes a dimmed memory until we return. It is only when Reincarnation is realized, that physical life becomes important again.
When you go to sleep, your subtle bodies dissociate from the physical and you have freedom in this zone. What you call Astral Travel is adventuring into this zone. If you do it consciously, you have some control over your encounters. Your Source Group will do all they can to protect you, but if you want terrifying experiences for some reason, they will be allowed.
This is one of the ways Possession can occur. Possession is a fact and shortens the life of the physical body because the body cannot subsist without the Psyche which created it which is called, our indwelling spirit.
If you want to have encounters in which you can learn, be healed and find resolution to your problems, then this is what you are provided. The Astral zone is not necessarily to be avoided, but like any environment, some of its occupants are to be avoided.
