| Hello, my name is Lacey. I just finished cosmetology school in Florida and I'm really confused at the salon I work at. I have been working there for the past two years as their assitant/receptionist. I still have to take the test to get my license, but slowly I am doing hair here and there. I have a bit of a self confidence issue because I don't want to mess anyone's hair up so sometimes I have backed down at a walk in b/c I was too timid to do it. Its hard at first trying to learn everything and I don't grasp the technical aspect of things and I get discouraged. Another problem is that this girl from my school came along to take over the hours I couldn't work because I started school and we needed a morning person. She was finished with school but is basically in the same boat as me b/c she hasn't taken the test either. Our boss will still let us do hair anyways. When she first started she jumped right in and showed him a few times she could cut hair, etc. A bunch of stylists are leaving and some of them have refered them to her over me. I know its a competitive business, but after working there so hard and longer than her I feel like I've been stabbed in the back! I know I could do a good job as soon as I get more practice I just felt so hurt. Not only that I have to get this show on the road to pay my bills. I really like makeup and do freelance. I only got my schooling to do hair so I could start off in a salon at first. I have a degree in theater and want to do makeup and hair for productions I just need to get my foot in the door. I think I've been paying my dues as far as sweeping hair, etc. and I feel so unappreciated and used there. What am I supposed to do? Be patient and see if I can build a clientele or persue the makeup like I wanted in the first place? Please give me a little advice into the issue if you could. Thanks, Lacey |

Is this a chain of salons or a privately owned one? If it is a chain go to another location but if it is private that is a hard call there. I feel like the makeup endevor may come later in like a few years. Also learn how to assert youself nicely and say you want more chances to prove yourself. Apparently that is what this other individual is doing. |

| Hello, thanks for replying so fast. It is not a chain of salons, its a privately owned one. Yes, I will try and assert myself nicely. I have trouble in that area. I was thinking last night that I just have to prove myself and get over the stage fright. I've always been a sort of behind the scenes type of person and its starting to get to me. I'm tired of being at the bottom. Thanks for the input. Lacey |

| Yes, I went to work today and just didn't stress about anything. Its not worth it. I moved down here to Florida from Pennsylvania with my husband a few years ago and its just tough. We are young and have no money. Well, we do okay, just too many bills. So it will just take time to make this thing work. My husband is a truck driver and he is hoping to get a better paying job with a trucking company. He currently works as a driver for a trucking company. He just got his commercial driver license not long ago so he is still early in his career, too. So things should get better it just takes time. Thanks again for the input. Lacey |

Neotechmatrix, my heart starts racing when I read what you guys post. I love makeup and really only got my license as a cosmotologist for 1.) we live in a sue happy country and I'm in a salon as an assistant just to get a start, but I do services on people which could get me in trouble 2.) Sometimes people want updos for their wedding so they might hire someone if they know how to do it all instead of just the makep. My problem now is getting my foot in the door. I moved from Pennsylvania down here to Florida (it was cheaper than NY or Cali. but now I don't know how true that is!) so I don't know too many people. I've been looking on the internet, but its hard. I gotta start somewhere. With the cuttting and coloring its so precise. But with the makeup if it doens't look right you just wipe it off and start over. I will pay close attention to anything that might steer me in the right direction. Man, oh, I need to blow off some steam! Thanks for the info. Lacey |

Tell him to network with older drivers. I have a feeling one of them may have a better lead for him for a better position. |
